Home/High Lift Conversion
Get the door out of your ceiling

High lift conversion
in Orange County.

Standard tracks turn your ceiling into a parking space for the door. A high lift conversion moves the door up and out of the way — the first step toward a car lift, a rack, or just standing up straight.

High lift garage door installation with raised track and a car lift alongside

What high lift actually means

On a standard installation the door travels up a short vertical section and then turns immediately into horizontal tracks that run back along the ceiling. The door spends its life parked across the ceiling, which is exactly where a car lift, a storage rack or a taller vehicle wants to be.

A high lift conversion extends the vertical track so the door climbs further before it turns. The horizontal run starts higher, and the space underneath comes back to you. It isn’t a different door — it’s a re-engineering of the track and counterbalance around the door you already have.

Who this is for

  • Installing a two-post or four-post car lift
  • Adding overhead storage racks
  • A van, truck or lifted vehicle that won’t clear
  • Converting the garage to a shop or gym
  • Fitting a lift-mounted rooftop tent or racks
  • Ceiling-mounted lighting or equipment
  • Wanting a jackshaft opener on the wall
  • Just reclaiming usable ceiling

What has to be true for it to work

  • 01
    Enough headroom above the opening

This is the whole question. A standard install needs roughly 12 to 15 inches above the door. Every inch of high lift you want needs an inch of clear wall and ceiling above that, plus room for the shaft, drums and bracing. We measure it — from the top of the opening to the ceiling, and to anything in the way.

  • 02
Nothing structural or mechanical in the path

Headers, ducts, sprinkler lines, conduit, water heaters on a platform and old opener rails all live in exactly the space high lift wants. Some can be moved. Some decide the answer.

  • 03
A counterbalance re-engineered for the new geometry

This is the part that gets skipped by people doing it cheaply. Raising the lift changes the cable drum requirement — you need high lift drums, longer cables, and a spring package recalculated for the new travel. Reusing standard drums on a high lift is unsafe and will not hold balance.

  • 04
    Usually a different opener

Once the horizontal track sits high, a conventional rail-mounted opener has nowhere sensible to go. Most conversions move to a jackshaft opener mounted on the wall beside the shaft — which also clears the ceiling completely. We’ll cover it in the quote rather than surprise you with it. Order of operations matters

Talk to us before you buy the car lift, not after. The height of lift you can achieve is decided by your ceiling, and knowing the number first changes which lift model makes sense. We’ve been called out to garages where the lift was already bolted to the slab and the answer was no.

What it costs

There is no useful average, because the price is driven by how much lift your headroom allows, whether the existing door and hardware are worth converting, the spring and drum package the new geometry needs, and whether the opener has to change. We come out, measure, and give you a number and a straight answer on feasibility — including “not in this garage” if that’s the truth.

If the existing door is at the end of its life, this is the moment to combine the conversion with a new door — the tracks, springs and hardware are all being replaced anyway.

Straight answers

High lift, answered.

How much headroom do I need for a high lift conversion?

A standard installation needs roughly 12 to 15 inches above the door opening. High lift needs that plus an inch of clear wall and ceiling for every inch of extra lift you want, along with room for the shaft, drums and bracing. The only reliable answer comes from measuring your specific garage, which we do free.

Do I need a new garage door for a high lift conversion?

Not usually. High lift re-engineers the track and counterbalance around your existing door. If the door itself is at the end of its life, combining the two makes sense because the hardware is being replaced regardless.

Will my current opener still work?

Often not. Once the horizontal track sits high, a conventional rail-mounted opener has nowhere practical to mount. Most conversions move to a jackshaft opener on the wall beside the torsion shaft, which also frees the ceiling completely. We include it in the quote rather than raise it later.

Can I convert to high lift myself with a kit?

The kits exist and the geometry is the problem. High lift changes the cable drum requirement and the spring calculation — running standard drums or the original springs on a high lift door leaves it out of balance and under load it was not designed for. It is torsion spring work, which is the most dangerous job on a residential door.

Should I book the conversion before or after buying a car lift?

Before. Your ceiling decides how much lift is achievable, and that number should inform which car lift you buy. We have been called to garages where the lift was already anchored to the slab and the honest answer was that it would not clear.
