| Material | Why people pick it | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Steel, non-insulated | The value option. Clean, durable, lowest cost per opening. | Louder in operation and offers nothing thermally. Fine on a detached garage. |
| Steel, insulated | Quieter, stiffer, better on an attached garage or a converted space. | The stiffness matters as much as the insulation — insulated sections dent less. |
| Woodgrain composite | The look of timber without the maintenance. Very popular on LA remodels. | Finish quality varies a lot between manufacturers. Ask to see the actual sample. |
| Modern flush panel | Flat, minimal, matches contemporary and mid-century homes. | Shows dents and dirt more readily than a raised-panel door. |
| Full-view aluminium and glass | Architectural, floods the garage with light, high-end look. | The heaviest option — the opener and spring system have to be sized for it. |
If the garage is attached to living space, or you’ve converted part of it into a gym, office or laundry, insulation stops being a luxury. An uninsulated door on an attached garage in the San Fernando Valley in August turns the whole wall into a radiator.
Headroom, backroom, side room, floor level and the actual rough opening. Doors get ordered to those numbers. A door ordered off the previous door’s size is how you end up with a gap at the top or a door that won’t clear the ceiling.
Material, insulation level, panel style, colour, windows or none, hardware. Not a catalogue dump — the shortlist that actually fits the opening and the budget you named.
Stock doors move quickly. Custom colours, glass and non-standard sizes take longer. You get the honest lead time when you order, not after.
The old door and hardware go with us. The new door goes in on new tracks, rollers and a spring system sized to its weight — reusing an old counterbalance on a heavier door is a shortcut we don’t take.
A heavier door on an old opener is a slow way to kill the opener. We test balance, force and sensors before we leave, and tell you if the unit is now under-specified.
That starting price is a single-car, non-insulated steel door in a standard opening. From there it moves with the material, the insulation, the panel style and the size — an insulated steel or woodgrain composite double door sits above it, and full-view glass or an oversized opening above that. We measure, show you the options that fit, and give you the number before you commit. Removal and haul-away of the old door is included, and the estimate is free.
Not sure yet whether yours needs replacing? A door with straight sections and a sound bottom rail is usually worth repairing. Once panels are rusting through or the door has been twisted, replacement wins on a five-year view — and we’ll tell you which one you have.
New doors start at $1,800+ installed. That starting price is a single-car, non-insulated steel door in a standard opening; it moves with material, insulation, panel style and size from there. Removal and disposal of the old door is included and the estimate is free.
A standard replacement is typically a single day once the door has arrived. The wait is the order, not the install — stock doors move quickly while custom colours, glass and non-standard sizes take longer. You get the lead time when you order.
Yes. The old door, tracks and hardware leave with us on install day and the site is cleared before we go.
If the garage is attached to living space, or you have converted part of it into a room, gym or office, yes — and the added stiffness means insulated sections dent less as well. On a detached garage used for storage it is a genuine choice rather than a necessity.
Often, but not always. A heavier door — insulated, or full-view glass — can be more than an older opener was specified for. We test balance and force against the new door before we leave and tell you honestly if the opener is now under-specified.
We do not recommend it and we do not do it. A new door has a different weight, which means a different counterbalance. Reusing an old spring system on a new door puts it permanently out of balance and shortens the life of everything attached to it.
